Johnson's Simple Truth

We created this site to help moms and dads understand the simple truth about JOHNSON’S® products.

The safety of your little one is your number one priority, so you’re likely to be researching what is best for your baby. We hope the information we're sharing here gives you peace of mind when using JOHNSON’S® products.

Common Myths

We understand that you want the best for your baby, and we're here to help! Let's start by addressing some common myths about our baby products.

Safety is our top priority. Our products always meet (or beat!) the government safety standards of the countries where they are sold. Where guidelines differ we apply whichever standard is stricter.

So why do our ingredients differ between countries? You might be surprised to know it's due to the preferences of parents. In the U.S. most moms prefer lather with big, glossy bubbles, whereas in Europe moms prefer creamy, smaller bubbles. To meet these preferences, we use different ingredients, which are equally mild, gentle and safe.

We know the long list of ingredients on the back of our bottles can be confusing. Our ingredients lists seem long because we're committed to following INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) guidelines for labeling as well as Food and Drug guidelines in the United States, not to hiding anything.

As a result, some relatively simple ingredients sound more complicated than they are. For example, coconut oil needs to be labeled as its chemical name, lauric acid.

See our Behind the Label section to get a better understanding of each of our ingredients.

Our products are non-toxic, and none of them contain carcinogens. In fact, we have very strict safety testing standards to ensure our products are always safe. On top of this, we're constantly researching and updating our products to respond to new research.

JOHNSON’S® brand does not test on animals. In fact, none of Kenvue Inc,personal care and cosmetic products are tested on animals.

When it comes to the development of medicines and medical devices which other parts of the Kenvue Inc. family of companies produce, animal use is required by governing bodies, such as the Food and Drug Administration.

Kenvue Inc must abide by these requirements, but when we do, we also have our own policies that reflect the highest animal welfare standards. To learn more about our policies, click here.

We absolutely do not use any numbing agents in our products. We would never put anything in our products that could harm a baby.

In reality, the reason we can make the claim "NO MORE TEARS®" is simple. Read the infographic below to find out why.

Absolutely. Safety is our top priority.

We have always ensured that all of our products meet or exceed global safety, regulatory and toxicology standards, but we don't stop there. JOHNSON’S® products are also submitted to a rigorous set of our own internal standards, which are outlined here.

Just like you check with your pediatrician or other healthcare professional when you have a question about your baby's health, our scientists work closely with pediatricians, dermatologists, ophthalmologists to ensure the safety of our products.

The short answer is when it comes to safety, there are no short cuts.

To share some details, in 1 year we reformulated 9 products – not many you might think – but our reformulations include an evaluation of over 2500 raw materials and more than 350 manufacturers and distributors. It requires input from over 180 professional specialists, including dermatologists and pediatricians. It’s a significant commitment of time and resources to reformulate a product already on the market – and it’s a commitment we’re happy to make – but it does take time.

We know how much you have come to know and love our JOHNSON’S® scents, but you are also careful about products you use on your newborn. With the improved formula we are excited to share that JOHNSON'S® baby TOP TO-TOE® Wash fragrance is now hypoallergenic, which is why the scent has changed.

What’s Changed

We know moms and dads are interested in our ingredients, and we can assure you we're always working to keep up our high standards. Here's a rundown of how we've changed our use of particular ingredients in our new formulations.

Quanternium-15

This type of preservative releases a very small amount of methylene glycol, the same type of formaldehyde found naturally in fruits and vegetables. In fact a person’s exposure to formaldehyde in an apple is greater than 15 bottles of baby shampoo.

Regardless, we have removed this ingredient from our products and replaced it with an alternative preservative system

1,4-Dioxane

1,4-Dioxane is a byproduct of a process that makes our cleansers non-irritating. It may sound like a strange chemical compound, but actually it also occurs naturally in tomatoes and coffee.

Our formulations have the lowest measurable level of 1,4-dioxane.

Parabens

Parabens are preservatives, which ensure that dangerous bacteria doesn't have the chance to grow. However, they also occur naturally in mangoes, blueberries and honey.

Although they are not harmful, we've found a way to remove them from our reformulated products, and replaced them with alternative preservatives.

We're working on removing parabens from ALL of our products by the end of 2015. To see our progress, click here.

Phthalates

There are many types of phthalates, but low-weight phthalates are commonly used in personal care products. These phthalates have a very strong safety record. Regardless, in order to ensure peace of mind, all our baby products worldwide are now phthalate free.

Other ingredients

Our first priority is doing what is best for babies. If there is a particular ingredient you have a question about, please contact us and we’ll respond to your specific query.
